Annie is a friendly little character and her coat is getting softer by the day. She gets along very well with her two K9 foster sisters, foster mom and foster dad. We are now getting lots of kisses and cuddles.
She was born blind and she is most likely 100% deaf but she doesn't let that slow her down. She learned how to use the dog ramp to get on the couch and the bed with an a few minutes of arriving at our home. She definitely knows how to get what she wants. I'm convinced she's not even aware that she is any different from the other dogs.
She very quickly learned the "come" command with a rub under the chin. We do have to watch where we step because she likes to be near you and oftentimes she will put her foot on top of your foot if you are standing still. I always joke that I am "being told to stay put by the foot". I find it really cute and endearing. She's definitely not shy about reminding you of meal time. Her little nose is very keen. After all, smell, touch, instinct and taste are all she has to go by. If she is heading in the wrong direction, a small tap on a shoulder or hip helps her find you or walk a straighter path. She is very proud of her herself and shows it with a tail wag whenever she "finds you" in a different room.
She very quickly learned to navigate the house. You definitely wouldn't want to rearrange your furniture or move the food and water bowl once she is familiar. She likes to explore and follow you everywhere you go. You will never be lonely with this sweet girl around. When she gets in a hurry to catch up to you though, she will gently bump into a wall or door. The biggest adjustment is getting the back door and bedroom door open in time as she expects them to always be open for her.
When we leave the house, she is in the crate for approximately 4 hours. She is getting better at not having accidents in the crate. A Kong filled with peanut butter helps her pass the time before she decides to take a nap in her crate. She can smell when you get home and is anxious to be let out.
Before she came into rescue, she roamed acreage freely and was able to potty whenever and wherever she wanted. She understands that going potty outside in the yard is good because she gets a treat immediately upon doing her business outdoors. We are trying to help her understand that going potty indoors is a no-no. A consistent routine is really important to keep her on track and set her up for success.
She's not quite sure how she feels about the harness and leash just yet but we will keep trying. She has no interest in toys but she will happily lounge next to you on the couch or in the bed. She may have partial hearing or she can feel vibrations because she will chime in when her foster sisters start barking at the neighbor dogs.
